Now that we have welcomed in February it’s time for a little bit of self reflection on the good ol’ New Years Resolution. We’re already hearing these five lame excuses for why people can’t possibly travel. Hmmm these really are just five convenient reasons for why you never will travel.
I just don’t have the money– Really? That’s the best that you can come up with? Travel in it’s simplest form does not have to be a bank breaker. A short well timed trip can rejuvenate yourself and reinvigorate your desire to travel. Money is always going to be an issue. Getting it, keeping it, spending it. If you want to travel you need to realign your priorities. For the month of January we went on three road trips around Victoria. Not one of these trips cost us over $150 in total!
Travel will ruin my career.
*sigh* No one wants to work with the boring person on line 22. Travel opens your eyes and mind to a whole new world. Essentially making you a better person. A good employer understands how important the work/life balance is and if anything will encourage you to travel and enjoy your holidays/vacation time. When I am assisting in the hiring process I look favorably on people who have taken the time to travel and enjoy themselves. Travel presents you with many unique problems that require some form of creativity and sometimes diplomacy to solve.
I will miss out on the important things in life.
Yes, yes you will. Life is a balancing act of give and take. Ask yourself what is really important to me? Long term travel may result in you missing birthdays, weddings, funerals, divorce parties. Stuff happens. Whether you are nearby or far away it’s going to happen.
I have a child
Congratulations for reproducing. Now don’t you want to give your child the best opportunity at being a well rounded international citizen? There are plenty of people out there travelling full time, long term with children. Not just one, but multiple. It just takes a little bit more creativity when it comes to logistical planning.
I have a house/pet/commitment
We all do. If you want long term travel rent out your house. Short term travel consider going place where your pets can join you. Recent years have seen an explosion in the number of websites connecting people who want to house sit, pet sit etc. If in doubt ask family and friends to lend a hand. I’m sure by now you are following us on Instagram and have seen the photos of Milly and Toby, who accompany us on most adventures in Australia.
If you are using these excuses to tell me why you can’t possibly travel then hear my words of advice-
STOP DUCKING AROUND.
Pick yourself up and go see what is beyond your couch. If you don’t do it now the moment will be gone. Who wants to live in regret-ville?
Yep. You’ve got the top 5 covered I reckon ….and regret-ville is one place I definitely don’t want visit.
Regret-ville is not a great place. Full of broken dreams and forgotten fantasy
I should just start sending this to all my friends. Wah wah wah, I don’t get to travel, you’re so lucky Renae.. um.. nope, it’s your choice. You can make whatever you want happen!!!
Send it to them! It’s so silly. Anyone can do just abou anything if they really want to.
Great post, couldn’t agree more, the pro’s far outweigh the con’s when it comes to travel. Well said 🙂
Thanks Jeremy. It’s the simple truths that people seem to ignore.
