Adventures are best when life just happens to you: When you sit back, relax, and enjoy the serendipity the travel lifestyle offers you. Whether you’re a long-term traveller or just enjoy a short vacation from your daily life.
Any road trip wouldn’t be complete without a place to lay your weary head. Thankfully, Albuquerque has a variety of accommodation options to meet every desire.
Why take a road trip to Albuquerque?
Sitting just over a mile above sea level, Albuquerque has a high desert climate, giving you and your family the chance to experience one of 310 sunny days and cool, crisp evenings. If you’re more of a snow bunny, there’s always the chance to embrace a winter road trip.
Here are our top three must-do activities when you’re on a road trip adventure and find yourself in Albuquerque.
Take All the Photos at the Balloon Fiesta

If your road trip adventures happen around October, why not inflate your imagination at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the world’s largest hot air balloon festival. You can expect to see more than 500 balloons in the fiesta, which has become known the most photographed event in the world. Spectators are allowed on the launch field, where as many as 100,000 people may watch the balloons take off in mass ascensions.
Get Fit and Fabulous in the Great Outdoors
Sitting so high above sea level, you’ll find yourself surrounded by majestic mountains, making this terrain the perfect paradise for hikers, bikers, and trail runners. During the warmer months, don’t be surprised to see people enjoying fitness vacations and training in the higher altitude.
Not one for reaching great heights? Why not take a leisurely stroll on one of the many interconnected Albuquerque trails? We recommend that you enjoy the pleasures of the Paseo del Bosque Trail, an easy 16-mile trail that’s perfect for inline skating.
Enjoy a Brew or Two
Michael Thomas Coffee Roasters now has two locations in Silver and Carlisle. The coffee here is roasted in Albuquerque and offers even the biggest coffee snob a chance to enjoy a local brew or even partake in a coffee class.
Enjoy yourself a decent brew from one of Marble Brewery’s three locations. The Downtown Marble Brewery location hosts free brewery tours at 2 p.m. every Saturday. Don’t drink and drive.
Downtown also offers many opportunities to get yourself a good dose of art, culture and Instagram-worthy photos.
Albuquerque is a city rich in history and wonder. The city embraces its Spanish heritage in all ways of life, from architecture and artwork to fine cuisine and keen sense of adventure. Albuquerque is considered to have been founded in 1706 by the Spanish; however, the Keresan and Tanoan people had been happily living in the area for centuries before European settlers arrived. Why not take a tour to explore the petroglyphs that are carved into the basalt?

Albuquerque has 310 sunny days each year?? Wow that’s incredible. I would love to go in October for the hot air balloon festival (:
I just had my first hot air balloon ride. The balloon fiesta definitely caught my eye. I never knew they had that in Albuquerque – definitely something to look forward to. This city definitely has its own unique character and charm that is one of the main reasons why visitors come here!
I absolutely love a road trip – but never thought as Albuquerque as a destination! This sounds lovely though, you’ve totally sold it to me! Those balloons too… wow! How knew!!!!
I’ve seen pictures on Instagram of the Balloon Fiesta, I didn’t know it was in Albuquerque. I understand why I see so many images on Instagram if there are 100k people watching the balloon take off and 500 uniquely colored balloons make perfect images! Michael Thomas Coffee Roasters sounds perfect for a caffeine buzz before going to photograph the balloons.
I was the same!
I’m so there for the hot air balloons! Omg there’s photos like that all over my instagram feed. I can’t imagine how amazing it is too see in person
I have never done Hot Air Balloon but Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival looks so colorful and stunning. Also will try Downtown Marble Brewery but will not drink and drive. I like the Spanish beauty and heritage and as you say this city is based on it then it is my place. Will go for it.
Wow, Albuquerque seems to have a lot to offer! Of course first thing that caught my eye was the hot air balloon festival, but for me personally even more interesting would be the great nature surrounding. Hiking for example is something I really love discovering new places by hiking here in Switzerland and it would be amazing to explore the mountains around Albuquerque one day too, I can imagine this is a unique and beautiful experience!
Holy moly! That hot air balloon festival looks so fun! I’ve seen photos of it but never thought to actually go. What a cool road trip!
As a keen camper, hiker and general lover of the great outdoors, Albuquerque sounds like my kind of place! Doing a road trip there just sounds like a lot of fun. I’d also just love to see the ballooning festival for the sheer atmosphere and of course the photos. This will have to be on my next North America itinerary.
Supposedly it’s the most photographed event in the world!
